Prospective Undergraduates

Study an Undergraduate degree at the Department of Statistical Science.

  • Resits: We do not consider applicants who are retaking qualifications for the Statistical Science Department, except for applicants who are eligible for the Access UCL scheme and have only retaken once. Please note that this policy on resits does not apply to AS examinations or, if relevant to your A-level specification, the resit of papers for individual modules. Instead it aims relate to the first aggregation of module scores to give the award of an A-level.
  • Direct entry to second or third year: Applications for direct entry to years 2 and 3 will not be considered.
  • Alternative personal statement: We will not consider an alternative personal statement.
  • Mature applicants (aged 21 or over at the start date of the degree programme): We understand that good applicants might have breaks in their education for various reasons, and we want mature students to excel at UCL.  We only consider applicants who have met or are predicted to meet our entry requirements. If those qualifications were completed more than three years ago then we may consider the application in more detail, to ensure that the applicant is a good fit for our programme.
  • UCL Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate (UPC): UPC students will receive a conditional offer for their chosen degree if they are predicted to meet its entry requirements (and have a clearly relevant personal statement). Progression from UCL’s Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate is explained on   the UCL website .
  • Access to HE Diploma: Most Access to Higher Education courses do not include enough mathematics to meet our entry requirements. We will consider access courses as a qualification, but we require a mathematics syllabus equal to or exceeding A level Mathematics.
  • BTEC: We accept BTEC qualifications. Please see the entry requirements on our prospectus pages.

The Department of Statistical Science at UCL offers a friendly and supportive atmosphere, where small-group teaching and personal attention are available for all students. When founded, it was the first university statistics department in the world; however, research and teaching have kept pace with modern concerns, including applications of statistics in science, medicine, industry, economics and finance. The department occupies recently refurbished accommodation with its own lecture theatre, common room, reading room and computer room.

Entry Procedure

Applications for admission should be made through UCAS. Our standard entry requirements are given in the online prospectus.

Your application should demonstrate high academic ability, particularly in Mathematics, an informed interest in all the components of your chosen degree programme, and good communication skills.

The Statistical Science E. J. Gumbel Scholarship

The department has made available funds to provide up to seven individual E. J. Gumbel scholarships per year for students starting their degree programme in the academic year 2025/26. The award is £3,200 in three equal termly instalments per year of study and is tenable for the normal duration of the degree programme studied as long as the student continues to be registered as a full time student of the department.

Studying Abroad Programme

The Department of Statistical Science’s MSci Statistical Science (International Programme) is a four year degree where the third year is spent at a leading university institution abroad.

The International Programme aims at continuing advanced education in statistics, as well as providing experience of education in a different cultural and/or linguistic setting which will broaden the horizon of students and increase chances to find positions with special emphasis on international expertise. The year abroad will offer the opportunity to study a greater variety of theory and methods of statistics and related areas. The experience of spending a year abroad and being exposed to another cultural but also scientific community will intrinsically contribute to developing skills such as the ability to take different perspectives, awareness of different possible approaches to a problem, independence of mind and thought. Also, students will be exposed to a range of different teaching and assessment methods.

Professional Accreditation

Royal Statistical Society Accredited University

A number of our undergraduate programmes are accredited by the Royal Statistical Society for students enrolling up to September 2028.

The following undergraduate programmes are covered by the accreditation scheme: Data Science BSc; Statistics BSc; Statistics, Economics and Finance BSc; Statistics, Economics and a Language BSc; Economics and Statistics BSc (Econ); Statistical Science (International Programme) MSci; Mathematics and Statistical Science BSc/MSci. This means that these programmes have been assessed by the Royal Statistical Society as being of the appropriate breadth and depth to provide a foundation for a career as a professional statistician.

Department Applicant Days will run from January 2026, and applicants will be invited via email. We also take part in centrally-organised UCL Open Days. If you can’t attend an open day but still want to see UCL, you can also book a campus tour.
