Imagining coastlines

Exploring future coastlines through art and geology to inspire sustainability action and make earth science more accessible to diverse communities.

Challenges being addressed

This interdisciplinary art-science project uses geology to inspire sustainability action. We will connect pasts and futures by walking along possible future coastlines in East Anglia, to exchange the art and science of long-term Earth change for creating local understandings. These coastline scenarios will indicate actions for achieving a preferred future.

Research impact

To expand the reach of geology beyond disciplinary boundaries to make it relevant to those who may not typically engage with it or who face barriers in interacting with and using it. 

The specific purpose is to combine art and science for using the pasts and futures of East Anglia’s coastlines to inspire sustainability action. Coastlines evolve through geological processes layered at different spatial and temporal scales. Learning from past geomorphological changes supports understanding of possible futures—and how we could create a future which we seek.

Imagining coastlines is funded by Geologists’ Association.
