How to Apply
Applications to our standard Ph.D. Programme open in November to start the following October. Please submit your application by 31st of January in order to be considered. Please ask your referees to write your reference letter within one week after you apply. If you are selected for interview, these will be held in February.
If you are applying for one of our fellowships (such as the CSC, RES, Dean Prize etc.), you must contact us much earlier, and apply before mid Decemeber.
Apply through the UCL form above. Once you have selected ‘Accept and apply’, fill in the drop-down lists with the following information and click the Search button:
Department: Physics and Astronomy
Programme Type: Postgraduate Research- Then select the ‘Apply Now’ link for Research Degree: Physics and Astronomy: High Energy Physics (programme code RRDPHYSHEP01), Full-time (contact us in advance if you are interested in part-time study). You need to create an account with the UCL Online Application Service in order to complete the online form.
- Research proposal, personal statement: The proposal and personal statement can be combined into a general statement: talk about why you are interested in a PhD in HEP, the experience you have, what topics you may like to work on, and anything else you find relevant. For applications for funded positions, please look at our offered PhD projects first. Enter this in the personal statement field, and refer to it in the research proposal field.
- Funding and supervisor: If you are only interested in certain offered projects please indicate that here. If you are open to any, then leave this blank but state your preferences in the above section.
- CV: Uploading a CV is recommended as it helps to give an overview, and allows you to highlight your achievements and strong points. Your panel will be reading many applications, so this is your chance to make yours standout.
- Once you have completed the form, save a copy and make a note of the date and time when you submitted it.
Notify Us
Once you have applied, please also notify us by email to PhysAst.Hep-Pgr-Admission@ucl.ac.uk. Include the date you completed your application, and to help us determine which sources of funding you may be eligible for, please also include whichever one of these statements applies:
- I am a UK citizen who has been resident in the UK for the last three years.
- I am a UK citizen who has not been resident in the UK for the last three years.
- I am an EU citizen with settled status.
- I am an EU citizen with pre-settled status.
- I am none of the above.
In your email please state which of the offered projects you wish to be considered for. If you wish to be considered for all positions that is fine, but please indicate your preferences.
Please put ‘PhD application’ in the title of your email. This is important to ensure the email does not get lost.
