These sessions are suitable for students in years 12 and 13

Earth Sciences:

What is Earth Sciences?

Suitable for years 12 & 13
Online
45 minutes

What is Earth Sciences?

Discover the diverse and exciting careers that can lead from a degree in Earth Sciences.
Students use 3D glasses to identify 3D rocks, construct a 3D fossil and 3D model of Mars.

Minerals & Mining

Suitable for years 12 & 13
Online or in person at UCL
30 minutes – 60 minutes

Hazards (Volcanoes and Earthquakes)

Did you know that your smartphone has over 20 different metals that make it work? But where and how do we get these metals? Is mining beneficial for our society and environment? Well, studying Geology at UCL is the best way to answer all these questions and get hands-on experience about Minerals & Mining!

Earth Sciences: From core to crust and beyond

Suitable for years 12 & 13
Online or in person at UCL
30 minutes – 60 minutes

From core to crust and beyond

Do you enjoy being outside? Walking through mountains and bogs, in sun and rain? Do you enjoy exploring museums and doing hands-on lab work? Then Environmental Geoscience might be for you! This presentation will walk you through some of the work you’d do as an Environmental Geoscience student, and some of the careers it can lead to. We’ll be looking at phylogenetic trees, copper mining, pokémon and a whole lot more…

Mathematics:

Mathematics Behind Scooby Doo

Suitable for years 12 & 13
Online or in person at UCL
30 minutes – 60 minutes

Mathematics Behind Scooby Doo

Scooby-Doo is a show known for its realistic solutions to even the strangest of mysteries. However, can the same be said about its mechanics? This presentation uses mathematics to analyse the animation and describes a step-by-step process of finding out how strong the titular character is.

Mathematics: Paradoxes

Suitable for years 12 & 13
Online or in person at UCL
30 minutes – 60 minutes

paradoxes

Paradoxes are more than simple forms of self-contradiction. Mathematics can help us analyse not just how paradoxes are self-contradictory, but also why they are. Using expectation and probability, we will examine three different paradoxes to see not only how they are self-contradictory, but also why. Be warned, demonstrations in this talk may have the potential to destroy friendships, so join at your own risk.

Natural Sciences:

Interweaving the sciences

Suitable for years 12 & 13
Online or in person at UCL
30 minutes – 60 minutes

Interweaving the sciences

Love science but struggle to choose your favourite subject? Then UCL’s Natural Sciences course might be for you! This presentation will highlight its flexibility and wide range of options you can choose from to tailor the degree to you, your interests, and your preferred career. Try out some of the subjects you could choose to study through fun interactive games such as biomolecular Bingo, other topics include organic chemistry and neurophysiology!

What is matter and why does it matter?

Suitable for years 12 & 13
Online or in person at UCL
30 minutes – 60 minutes

What is matter and why does it matter?

We all know what fluids are but how do they work? What is matter and why does it matter? This presentation will introduce some of the components covered when studying a Natural Science degree at UCL.

Bridging Mind: Science and Beyond

Science & Beyond
Suitable for years 12-13
Online or in person at UCL
30 minutes – 60 minutes

Science is more than science itself, and not only scientists work with science. If you love social science and want to gain some “non-scientific” insights into science, the UCL Science and Technology Department might be a good fit for you! This presentation will make a brief introduction to what we study in the department, what makes our degrees different from others, and future paths after graduation. Come and play in the interdisciplinary field of natural science, social science and humanity, and see how the emerging sciences and technologies shape our lives.
