Hazards (Volcanoes and Earthquakes)
Suitable for years 3-6: Online - 45 minutes
This workshop introduces students to the structure of earth, where and why earthquakes and volcanic eruptions happen. Pupils use 3D glasses and 3D pictures of volcanoes to find out more about these natural hazards.
Fossils
Suitable for years 1-6: Online - 45 minutes
This flexible workshop can be adapted to be run with a range of different abilities. Students find out about different types of fossil and how they are made. Students then view different fossils using 3D glasses and stereographic fossil images.
Arctic, Sea Ice and Climate Change
Suitable for years 3-6: Online - 45 minutes
Students explore the polar climate and sea ice in the Arctic using 3D glasses and 3D images of the Arctic. After understanding what climate change is, why it is happening and the effects of a warming world, students then look at the impact it is having in the Arctic.
Planets in the solar system
Suitable for years 1-6: Online - 45 minutes
This workshop looks at the planets in the solar system and some of the different ways in which scientists study space (without actually going there!). The students will use 3D glasses and 3D images to discover the surface of Mars!
Rocks and Minerals
Suitable for years 1-6: Online - 45 minutes
A workshop that introduces pupils to different types of rocks and minerals and gets them to think about where they come from and what we use them for. Students are challenged to identify different rock types using 3D glasses and 3D pictures.

Earthquakes and seismic waves
Suitable for years 7-11: Online - 45 minutes
- Describe the cause of an earthquake.
- Describe the key differences between longitudinal and transverse waves.
- Name two types of seismic wave: P and S and explain that P waves are longitudinal
- and S waves transverse.
- Explain how observations of P and S waves are used to identify the Earth’s core.
This workshop uses 3D glasses and 3D images to show tectonic plate boundaries.
Planets in the Solar System
Suitable for years 7-11: Online - 45 minutes
- Learn the names and order of the planets in the Solar System.
- Identify the Sun as our nearest star.
- Identify other objects in the solar system.
Students use 3D glasses to explore Mars in 3D and can construct a 3D model of Mars.
Geology (The rock cycle)
Suitable for years 7-9: Online - 45 minutes
- Describe physical properties of rocks.
- Describe and explain the rock cycle.
Students use 3D glasses to identify 3D rocks.
Evolution of the atmosphere
Suitable for years 7-11: Online - 45 minutes
- Describe the current understanding of how the atmosphere originally formed
- Describe and explain how the atmosphere evolved over time
- State the current composition of the atmosphere
Students pop-out and construct the Geological time tower puzzle to learn the stages in Earth’s history.
Minerals & Mining
Suitable for years 7-11: Online or in person at UCL - 30 minutes – 60 minutes
Did you know that your smartphone has over 20 different metals that make it work? But where and how do we get these metals? Is mining beneficial for our society and environment? Well, studying Geology at UCL is the best way to answer all these questions and get hands-on experience about Minerals & Mining!
Arctic, Sea ice and Climate Change
Suitable for years 7-11: Online - 45 minutes
- State the difference between climate and weather
- Describe the composition of the atmosphere
- Explain the greenhouse effect in terms of interaction of short and long
- wavelength radiation
- Explain the role of sea ice in maintaining the global temperature.
This workshop uses 3D glasses and 3D images to explore the Arctic climate.
What is earth sciences?
Suitable for years 7-11: Online - 45 minutes
- Discover the diverse and exciting careers that can lead from a degree in Earth Sciences.
Students use 3D glasses to identify 3D rocks, construct a 3D fossil and 3D model of Mars.
Fossils
Suitable for years 7-9: Online - 45 minutes
- Describe how fossils are formed.
- Describe the features of different fossils.
- Explain how fossils are evidence for evolution.
Students use 3D glasses to identify 3D fossils
Earth Sciences: From core to crust and beyond
Suitable for years 7-11: Online or in person at UCL - 30 minutes – 60 minutes
Do you enjoy being outside? Walking through mountains and bogs, in sun and rain? Do you enjoy exploring museums and doing hands-on lab work? Then Environmental Geoscience might be for you! This presentation will walk you through some of the work you’d do as an Environmental Geoscience student, and some of the careers it can lead to. We’ll be looking at phylogenetic trees, copper mining, pokémon and a whole lot more…
