UCL Department of Earth Sciences has launched the CIREN climate science research network which brings together scientists across UCL working on climate, led by Rosemary Willatt. Hundreds of staff and research students have already signed up and the initiative is constantly growing via our events. We have recently added RICE (Researchers in Climate and Environment), CIREN’s new branch specifically for Early Career Researchers.
The CIREN launch event in July 2025 included guest speakers Susanne Mecklenburg, Head of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Climate Office, and Laura Dawkins, Expert Scientist in Climate Risk & Resilience from the UK Met Office as well as speakers from across UCL. Registrations to participate came from 20 UCL departments making this a truly cross-departmental and faculty network. Following this, our events this year cover diverse topics from the cryosphere to low carbon energy transition to statistics and tipping points. We will hold a longer event on July 2nd to celebrate UCL’s 200th anniversary – looking 200 years into the past and future of climate change, computing and the carbon cycle.
Events are open to all UCL staff and students in person with networking opportunities, and everyone can register to watch online. To find out more about CIREN, join the network or discover our events, take a look at the CIREN website.
