Andy is emeritus professor at the University of Sussex. He has been a friend to the department for decades, including as its external examiner. He was a professor at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) of the University of Sussex, where he worked for more than thirty years on issues around power, uncertainty, sustainability, transformation and diversity in science, technology and innovation. Among other roles, Andy currently serves on the Research Council of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) and on the sociology sub-panel for the 2029 UK Research Excellence Framework (REF2029).
Jean-Baptiste Gouyon, head of the Department of Science and Technology Studies, said “We’re so pleased that Andy has joined our department as we go from strength to strength. Andy’s work has inspired many of us for decades. It’s wonderful to now have him as part of UCL STS.”
Andy Stirling said “Having admired work in UCL STS for so long, I’m delighted to formalise this longstanding close association with so many excellent colleagues here and hugely look forward to the next steps in our shared work on so many important worldwide challenges.”
Andy is looking forward to contributing to the department’s activities across teaching, research and supervision. In particular, he will help shape UCL’s new Centre for Responsible Innovation - an ambitious new initiative supporting research, engagement and capacity building on urgent issues of innovation and democracy.
