MAPS Innovation Showcase: A Celebration of Innovation and Enterprise

23 June 2025

On Monday 16th of June the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences hosted the MAPS Innovation Showcase, bringing together researchers across the faculty for a vibrant celebration of innovation and enterprise.

The event centred around a compelling series of flash talks that spotlighted cutting-edge research and entrepreneurial initiatives across the faculty. The talks featured a diverse range of topics and speakers (professors, early career researchers and professional services staff) including:

  • Commercialising Research – Harry Lamb (UCLB)
  • An Intro to Innovation and Enterprise at UCL – Lydia Harwood (UCL I&E)
  • Secure and Anonymised Framework for Electronic Health Records (SAFEHR) – Chloe Stockford (UCL/UCLH)
  • UK Knowledge Exchange Hub for Mathematical Sciences – Leah Frenette (MAPS Faculty I&E)
  • Nanopore and Membrane Technology – Jonah Ciccone (Chemistry)
  • Graphene-Based Biosensors – Bing Li (Institute for Materials Discovery)
  • Venture Building for a Net-Zero World – Chris Howard (Physics & Astronomy)
  • Molecular Machines for Cell Membrane Nanomechanics – Alexia Rottensteiner (Chemistry)
  • Enterprise Ideas at UCL – Jawwad Daar (Chemistry)
  • Magnetic Nanoflowers for Cancer Treatment – Liudmyla Storozhuk (Physics & Astronomy)
  • Finden Ltd – Andy Beale (Chemistry)

The session was introduced by Krista Macmillan, Director of Knowledge Exchange Policy & Planning with UCL Innovation & Enterprise, who highlighted that the event was in celebration of the faculty’s Vice Dean (Innovation & Enterprise) Professor Nguyen TK Thanh’s Spirit of Innovation Award which she won at UCL’s Creating Impact Through Knowledge Exchange Awards in February.

Following the talks, attendees enjoyed a networking lunch, fostering connections and conversations around collaboration, spinouts, and impactful knowledge exchange.

Professor Nguyen TK Thanh (UCL Physics & Astronomy) said: “Many thanks to UCL I&E for their initiative of providing a fund for the award recipients to celebrate. I was delighted to see a broad range of I&E activities from innovative/translational research to spinouts from the MAPS faculty, and the diverse participations from all IE corners of UCL.

“It was really inspiring to hear PhD students, and researchers talking so enthusiastically about their research and real-life applications. We had a great networking opportunity and every involved was really happy.”

The showcase was a testament to the faculty’s commitment to translating research into real-world impact. A heartfelt thank you to all speakers, contributors, and attendees for making the event a success.
