We were thrilled that the staff of the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences has built on their success from last year and more than doubled the number of awards achieved at 2025 UCL Sustainability Awards Ceremony.
The Faculty took away 43 awards for the Green Impact and LEAF programmes, with several new departments and labs taking part in the programmes for the first time this year! Each team’s dedication and hard work towards their submission helps make our faculty’s laboratories and offices more environmentally sustainable.
Professor Ivan Parkin, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, remarked: “We are delighted that so many of the faculty’s departments have received sustainability awards for this year, significantly improving their engagement on previous years and making us the 3rd most engaged faculty for LEAF.
“We are proud that 7 of our 11 departments are now taking part in either Green Impact or LEAF, with many established teams challenging themselves to aim for silver and gold levels. We thank everyone involved for their time and dedication to improving sustainability at UCL.”

Special Sustainability Awards
We are also proud that recent student Avan Langridge (BSc Earth Sciences) was highly commended for the Sustainability Impact Award for her work as founder and co-leader of Our Youth For The Climate (OY4C), a global youth-led organisation.
Next steps and Sustainability Plan Launch
Next year is an exciting year for sustainability at UCL. After closing the previous 2019-2024 Sustainability Strategy, a new institutional Sustainability Plan (2025-2035) will be launched focusing on key commitment areas in carbon and energy, biodiversity, responsible consumption, education and research. Look out for the official launch of the new Sustainability Plan from September.
