HEA (Higher Education Authority) fellowships recognise excellence in teaching, supporting students’ learning or leading an aspect of education at UCL. There are four different levels of fellowships – associate fellows, fellow, senior fellows and principal fellows – open to both teaching assistants and staff.
This award follows the success earlier this year of Dr Punam Yadav FHEA and Dr Jessica Field FHEA, who were both awarded an HEA Fellowship.
Dr Faure Walker said she was delighted to gain Senior Fellow status. “Going through the process of applying helped me reflect and focus on my teaching leadership in terms of how we use pedagogy, scholarly works and professional development training in teaching both for myself and the whole IRDR,” she explained. “It has helped me consider how I can go forward improving both my own, my colleagues’, and the overall department teaching quality.”
Feedback on her application highlighted this “commitment to promoting education locally; leading, supporting and mentoring colleagues; modelling best practice and playing an instrumental role in the growth of the department” and praised her reflection on developing cross-disciplinary programmes.
As part of UCL’s strategic focus on teaching excellence, gaining an HEA fellowship is recognised in UCL’s Academic Career Framework, a framework to help plan and support career development and recognise achievements.
As well as undertaking research, Dr Faure Walker is also IRDR Director of Studies and Graduate Tutor (Taught). She teaches on the IRDR Master’s modules IRDR0015 - Integrating Science into Disaster Risk Reduction, and IRDR0001 - Natural and Anthropogenic Hazards and Vulnerability.
