Peter Mountney Named Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence

  • Peter Mountney Named Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Peter Mountney, Senior Principal Scientist at Siemens Medical Imaging Technologies and visiting researcher at UCL Quantum, has been named as one of the Royal Society’s Entrepreneurs in Residence.

As part of the Royal Society’s ‘Labs to Riches’ initiative, the Entrepreneurs in Residence aims to support links between industry and academia, bringing real-world experience and expertise to bear in advising and mentoring students and staff, and helping researchers with the commercial potential of their work.

Out of over 100 applicants, Peter is one of 19 to be awarded funding under the scheme. Here’s how he introduced his research collaborations between Siemens and UCLQ:

UK society is facing unprecedented challenges including a growing demand for energy that preserves natural resources, an ever greater need for high quality, low cost healthcare and security that preserves privacy and freedom. At the same time, new technologies such as advanced sensors, hardware and software are shaping the world by keeping our digital economy safe and improving UK productivity.

Scientific advances in Quantum Technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are at the heart of tackling these large challenges and shaping our future. UCL is a world leader in these fields through the Quantum Science and Technology Institute, Centre for Computational Statistics and Machine Learning and Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit.

The aim of this Entrepreneur in Residence placement is to increase the impact of UCL’s Quantum and AI research on UK society by serving as a catalyst between academia and industry and helping to translate research. This will be achieved by creating and educating: Creating new prototypes and products, a fertile ground for start-ups, collaborations with industrial/government partners; Educating staff and students to help them understand how research is performed in industry and how companies uses science to solve problem.
