  • Seminar 10th May 2017 by Dr Tom Oliver

Dr Tom Oliver, Royal Society URF in the Department of Chemistry at Bristol University will be giving a seminar on Wednesday 10 May from 1 pm - 2 pm (venue to be confirmed).

Following ultrafast energy and charge transfer using multidimensional optical spectroscopies

Ultrafast two-dimensional optical spectroscopies are incisive tools for studying excited state energy transfer, and the ground state structures of complex chemical and biological systems. The recently developed two-dimensional electronic-vibrational (2DEV) spectroscopy, has the capacity to directly correlate the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom. I will present its application to light harvesting complex II (LHCII), the major light harvesting antenna of higher plants. From these 2DEV spectra, we are able to further our understanding of the connection between LHCII spatial and electronic structures.

Organic-Inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskites are presently one of the most intensively studied photovoltaic films aimed at efficient solar capture and transduction. Previous studies have demonstrated that the band gap and efficiency can be tuned by judicious choice of the organic cation. Our recent two-dimensional infrared spectroscopic (2DIR) studies of formamidinium lead iodide perovskite films reveal the organic-cation rotational re-orientation timescale for the organic cation, and the level of vibrational-phonon coupling.
