  • Professor Claire Carmalt appointed as new Head of Department for Chemistry

The Faculty is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Claire Carmalt as the new Head of Department for UCL Chemistry. The appointment will be effective as of next academic year (2016-17). She will be the 18th Head of Department for Chemistry and the first woman appointed to the position.

Professor Carmalt joined the Chemistry department in 1997 as a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellow and soon after became a Lecturer. She was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2002, Reader in 2004 and Professor in 2009.  She has been Head of Inorganic & Materials Chemistry Section for the past 6 years and Vice-Dean (Education) for the Mathematical & Physical Sciences Faculty for the last 18 months.

Her research involves developing innovative new routes to technologically important inorganic materials. Her work has included the synthesis and characterisation of novel molecular precursors for use in thin film deposition; transparent conducting oxides and photocatalysts by Chemical Vapour Deposition and superhydrophobic paints.

Professor Carmalt said “I am delighted to be have been appointed as the next Head of Chemistry at UCL. It is a huge honour to be the first female head of chemistry at UCL in its rich history. The department was ranked second best in the UK for most impactful research in REF2014 and is one of the top chemistry departments in the UK.  I am very much looking forward to leading the department into the next phase of its exciting development.”

Prof Carmalt will succeed Prof Ivan Parkin, from 1st October who was appointed as Dean of the Faculty.
