Whether you’re embarking on the foundational steps of your maths education journey, or are ready to dive deeper into a specialist strand, you can look forward to innovative teaching, globally-significant research and an exceptional learning experience at the heart of the capital.
Why you should choose UCL for maths:
We offer a lot more flexibility than at some universities, so you can shape your maths education towards the exact subjects you’re interested in most. Whether that’s number theory, or modelling, or fluid mechanics. You’ll find all of those topics on offer and others, with diverse options available both within and outside our department.
You’ll be taught and supervised by the people who are leading on maths research and conversations globally, writing the books on the subject, and advising industry and governments (and you’ll play your part in developing your own research, too).
Maths is a challenging subject. It’s also a discipline that builds a lot of skills, in everything from quantitative analysis and computing, to strategic thinking and problem-solving. Our graduates are highly sought after for roles in engineering and science, business and finance, data science and computing.
Being in London has distinct advantages for maths students. There’ll be plenty of networking and internship opportunities on the doorstep, and the chance to be part of a thriving mathematical community.
People come from all over the world to study maths at UCL. You’ll be learning with people from over 60 countries, from a wide range of backgrounds, who all have the same motivation and enthusiasm as do you for mathematics.
UCL Mathematics publishes the highly-regarded research journal Mathematika, with the London Mathematical Society. All surplus income from the publication is returned to mathematicians and mathematics research via the Society's research grants, conference grants, prizes, initiatives for early career researchers and the promotion of mathematics.

“Studying mathematics at UCL has been an amazing experience so far, with lecturers always being happy to answer questions and the department providing many opportunities to explore more maths.”
Professor Christina Pagel
Director of CORU, UCL Mathematics
“For me, Maths teaches you a way of thinking, and a way of thinking through problems, that is just so valuable – not just for you personally, but for everyone around you, like employers and collaborators. The way you’re taught maths teaches you to understand assumptions and evidence, and builds skills that are highly valuable for whatever career you choose to go into.”
