Sources of help and advice for MSc students encountering problems or difficulties.

Departmental Support

If you have any problems or difficulties, please discuss them with a member of staff. Specific questions about mathematical problems in your courses should in the first instance be taken up with the appropriate course lecturer. For more general questions (academic, personal, financial, accommodation, etc), you can talk with the following (see below for more details):

  • Your personal tutor

  • The MSc Administrator, Lynn Audronis

College Support

Outside the Department, there are the College support services, which include:

  • Dean of Students (Welfare), Dr Ruth Siddall, Dean.of.Students AT ucl.ac.uk
  • UCL Union, The Rights and Advice Centre, First Floor of the Bloomsbury Theatre, 15 Gordon Street
  • UCL Counselling Service, located at 3 Taviton Street (ground floor) (5 minutes walk from the Department): students can just go along there or phone (020 7679 1487). The student counselling service provides completely confidential help on all issues
  • the Advisor - appointments can be made through the Dean of Students Office (020 7679 4545).

UCL 24/7 Student Support Line (no longer Care First) 

UCL 24/7 Student Support Line, is a free, confidential wellbeing support service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

UCL 24/7 Student Support Line is offered as part of the three ways you can access support services:

In-the-moment support is available via the UCL 24/7 Student Support Line, in 35+ languages, including sign. You will be able to speak to an adviser who can help you through any issues you are facing. This may include feeling anxious, stressed, having money worries, cultural differences, homesickness, addiction, relationship difficulties, bereavement, bullying, harassment and sexual misconduct or anything you feel is impacting your mental health, wellbeing, or time at UCL. 

The advisors reflect the diverse range of backgrounds needed from our students. You can curate your own experience by selecting to speak to a male/female, a BAME or an advisor with additional training in LGBTQ+ related issues.

If you become unhappy with your programme of study, or feel that you are falling behind and cannot cope, or are experiencing other problems, it is very important that you contact the MSc Tutor Dr S Timoshin (or another member of staff of the department) straightaway.  These difficulties can often be resolved but it is much easier if they are dealt with promptly (this is true regardless of whether you need some help to continue with the course, wish to change course, or even to give up the course).
