Available Funding
Information on funding opportunities for prospective PhD students.
Please note that all funding for the 2026/27 academic year has now been allocated. The next available funding opportunities will be for students starting in October 2027.
PhD applicants interested in studying in the Department of Mathematics can be considered for a range of funding opportunities. Many of these have deadlines in January, so applicants are encouraged to apply early to maximise their chances of securing funding. Given the high number of applications the department receives, securing funding is a highly competitive process.
All applicants are automatically considered for Teaching Assistantships (see below), while some other funding routes require additional application processes. The information provided below offers further guidance for interested applicants.
Informal enquiries about funding can be sent to math.pgrtutor@ucl.ac.uk.
Teaching Assistantships cover tuition fees and provide a stipend for 4 years. They also involve some compulsory teaching duties. The department offers training to new teaching assistants and there are opportunities to avail of further development with UCL’s Arena Centre.
The CCMI Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) is a collaboration between University College London and Imperial College London offering a novel and innovative PhD training programme at the interface of computational modelling, data science, and research software engineering.
For more information please visit the CCMI website.
The LSGNT is a Centre for Doctoral Training run jointly between UCL, Imperial College and King's College London. There is a separate admissions process and students wishing to do PhDs in geometry or number theory at UCL should apply to the LSGNT in the first instance. The admissions process for September 2026 entry will open on 30 November 2025 and close on 31 December 2025.
For more information please visit the LSGNT website.
UELA studentships cover tuition fees and provide a stipend for 4 years. The selection process is adminisered centrally by the UCL Doctoral School and candidates must apply by early January. Successful candidates undertake their PhD research in the Department of Mathematics.
An overview of the projects offered by the Department of Mathematics through the UELA process for October 2026 can be viewed at the following link.
Informal enquiries about the scheme can be directed to the Department of Mathematics while formal application queries should be submitted to the UCL EPSRC Doctoral Training Manager.
For further information on how to formally apply please see the UCL UELA website.
UCL Mathematics is a partner institution of the Martingale Foundation, which was established to ensure that family income is not a barrier to pursuing postgraduate education in mathematics. Martingale Foundation studentships include a stipend and cover tuition fees for 4 years.
For more information please visit the Martingale Foundation website.
The Heilbronn Doctoral Partnership (DTP) offers a number of fully funded studentships each year in the areas of pure mathematics, probability, data science, and quantum information. PhD students funded through Heilbronn and based at UCL benefit from UCL’s support and resources, alongside activities and opportunities provided by the Heilbronn DTP.
For the 2026–27 academic year, UCL has been allocated one funded studentship through this route. This funding will be administered by the Department of Statistical Science for 2026–27 entry. Interested applicants should contact the Department of Statistical Science at stats.pgr-admissions@ucl.ac.uk.

Further information can be found on the CSC-UCL webpages.
Agreeing to fund your own PhD studies is a significant financial commitment, and you should not offer to do this unless you are sure you will have the resources available for the full period of study.
Information on tuition fees can be found on the MPhil/PhD in Mathematics webpage. Note that fees for international students and UK students are charged at different rates.
Self-funded students must still pass our competitive admissions process. If you are admitted on a self-funded basis you will not usually be considered for funding in future years of your programme.
