New Dean of Mathematical & Physical Sciences appointed

Prof Ivan Parkin

The faculty is delighted to announce the appointment of Prof Ivan Parkin as the new Dean of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. The appointment will be effective as of next academic year (2016-17).

Prof Parkin joined UCL in 1993 and is currently Head of the Department at UCL Chemistry, a position he has held for six years. He is an inorganic materials chemist and has led the development of new inorganic materials and the discovery of new phases and polymorphs.

His work has included light activated antimicrobial polymers; self-cleaning window glass; discriminating gas sensors based on zeolites; thermochromic coatings by Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) and Photoaccustic based ultrasound fibers.  His group have published over 550 publications, including recent work in Nature Materials, Science and Nature Comms.

He said: "I am looking forward to taking up this new challenge.  It is a great honour to be the new dean of MAPS.  The MAPS faculty has a prestigious history with 15 previous Nobel prize winners and two Fields medalists from its constituent departments.  Research from the faculty is addressing key global challenges.  I aim to help foster stronger connections both within the faculty and throughout the wider college."

Prof Michael Arthur, President & Provost of UCL, said: ""I am delighted that Prof Ivan Parkin has been appointed to be the next Dean of Maths and Physical Sciences. He has an outstanding personal track record in both research and education, and a proven excellence in academic leadership, as a highly successful Head of Chemistry at UCL.  He will also be an excellent member of the UCL senior management team and I look forward to working with him in guiding UCL and the Faculty of Maths and Physical Sciences forward."

Prof Parkin will succeed Prof Richard Catlow, FRS, from 1st October who was appointed as Interim Dean of the Faculty on 1st July.
