Mike Ewing

Sadly, Professor Mike Ewing passed away last Saturday.
Mike was a member of the UCL Chemistry Department from his arrival, in 1975 from Australia, as a Ramsay Fellow.

Mike's research concentrated on the thermo-physical properties of fluids, and included developing a very accurate methodology for the determination of the gas constant. He rose through the ranks of the Department and College, spending time in the role of Deputy Head of Department, as well as serving UCL as Dean of Students (Academic) and Acting Vice-Provost (Education).

Many will remember fondly Mike's wonderful attention to detail, which permeated every task he undertook; be that in the role of Chair of Departmental Examinations  for 18 years, or developing experiments for the Undergraduate teaching laboratories. This intellectual rigour was coupled with a disarmingly dry and dead-pan sense of humour.

Mike retired from UCL in 2014, but still remained in active contact with many staff and students. He will be sadly missed by all.
