For this and other independent research fellowships, we are particularly interested in applications from the fields of computational materials science, data driven materials discovery, AI for materials, and Quantum Materials and Applications.
If you are applying for a Research Fellowship to be hosted in the Department, please make sure that you follow the timetable and instructions below for each stage of your application.
Note: Applications have an internal deadline in IMD that is usually two calendar months before the external fellowship application deadline, unless mentioned explicitly otherwise in the table below.

All candidates will need as a first step to register for their Expression of Interest by email as described on the main research fellowships page. Applications can only proceed once you have received confirmation that your application will be supported. IMD@ucl.ac.uk. However you are encouraged to contact the research group leaders in advance for any advice related to the proposal it slef (see the main research fellowship page).
If you are invited to proceed with an application, you will be sent more information, as well as, in some cases, a costing form to complete, and you should then follow the instructions at the bottom of this page.

Application Process
- Register interest as described in the main Research Fellowships page.
- If it is confirmed that your application will be supported through UCL, you will be allocated an academic 'sponsor' in the department, who will be your main point of contact for the scientific side of your application. The Grants Team will assist with the costings. They will send you a costing form to you by email, which you will need to complete and return by the Costing Form deadline. The Grants Team will create a costing for you on Worktribe and make sure that your costs are eligible and within budget.
- Start your application on Royal Society's FlexiGrant portal. Please give access to Bhavana b.songara@ucl.ac.uk (Bhavana Songara) in the Research Support role and invite the HoD (Prof Adham Hashibon) using the email address a.hashibon@ucl.ac.uk, as the HoD will need to complete an Institutional Support section of the application. You will also need to invite your chosen referees.
- Once you have finalised your costs with the Grants Team, they will submit your application on Worktribe for internal approvals by the WT Submission deadline.
- Make sure that your chosen referees have supplied their Letters of Support in plenty of time before the deadline - you will not be able to submit your application until your referees have completed their section of the application.
- The Grants Team will let you know when your costing has been approved. You should then submit the completed application on FlexiGrant with all the required references and documents attached by the Application Submission deadline - please note that this will be a few days before the actual Funder deadline, as there will be a final check carried out by the UCL Pre-Award team. We have indicated in the timetable above by which date your application should be complete and ready to submit. Please make sure you are available to be contacted in the days after you have submitted your application, as you may be asked to make amendments.

- Once you have finalised your costs with the Grants Team, they will submit your application on Worktribe for internal approvals by the WT Submission deadline.

UKRI
UKRI implement an organisational cap for this fellowship, so an internal selection process will apply.The UCL internal process will be managed by UCL Research, Innovation and Global Engagement (RIGE), and all candidates must submit an EOI for consideration to UCL RIGE. If you are selected to proceed with a full application, the Grants Team will then guide you through the costing process.
Round 11 information:
UCL expect to be allowed to submit 10 applications for Round 11. All interested candidates to submit an EOI to UCL RIGE by 12 noon on 14 January 2026 - full submission details available upon request from PhysAst.Grants@ucl.ac.uk.

- Once you have provided a draft copy of your application with the justification of resources, the Grants Team will submit your application on Worktribe for internal approvals by the WT Submission deadline.
- The Grants Team will let you know when your costing has been approved. You should then submit the completed application on EC Funding Portal with all the required documents attached by the Application Submission deadline.
Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851
