ATLAS enters the High-Luminosity Era

  • ATLAS enters the High-Luminosity Era

The ATLAS Collaboration at CERN has officially entered the High-Luminosity (HL) era following the end of the Large Hadron Collider’s third data collection run on 27 June 2026. Over the coming years, CERN will undertake a major upgrade programme, with particle beams expected to return in 2030. ATLAS is being extensively rebuilt with advanced technologies, including a new all-silicon Inner Tracker, a High-Granularity Timing Detector, upgraded electronics, and powerful GPU-based computing systems, allowing the HL-LHC to dramatically increase collision rates, enabling more precise studies of fundamental particles and forces. In the meantime, the global physics collaboration will analyse the experiment’s largest-ever dataset collected during Run 3 of the LHC: 332 fb⁻¹ of collision data, allowing analysis from precision measurements of the Higgs boson to searches for rare phenomena that could point to physics beyond the Standard Model.
