Earth Sciences:

Earthquakes and seismic waves

Suitable for years 7-11: Online - 45 minutes

Earthquakes and seismic waves
  • Describe the cause of an earthquake.
  • Describe the key differences between longitudinal and transverse waves.
  • Name two types of seismic wave: P and S and explain that P waves are longitudinal
  • and S waves transverse.
  • Explain how observations of P and S waves are used to identify the Earth’s core.

This workshop uses 3D glasses and 3D images to show tectonic plate boundaries.

Evolution of the atmosphere

Suitable for years 7-11: Online - 45 minutes

evolution_of_the_atmosphere
  • Describe the current understanding of how the atmosphere originally formed
  • Describe and explain how the atmosphere evolved over time
  • State the current composition of the atmosphere

Students pop-out and construct the Geological time tower puzzle to learn the stages in Earth’s history.

Geology (The rock cycle)

Suitable for years 7-9: Online - 45 minutes

Geology
  • Describe physical properties of rocks.
  • Describe and explain the rock cycle.

Students use 3D glasses to identify 3D rocks.

Planets in the Solar System

Suitable for years 7-11: Online - 45 minutes

Planets in the Solar System
  • Learn the names and order of the planets in the Solar System.
  • Identify the Sun as our nearest star.
  • Identify other objects in the solar system.

Students use 3D glasses to explore Mars in 3D and can construct a 3D model of Mars.

Minerals & Mining

Suitable for years 7-11: Online or in person at UCL - 30 minutes – 60 minutes

Hazards (Volcanoes and Earthquakes)

Did you know that your smartphone has over 20 different metals that make it work? But where and how do we get these metals? Is mining beneficial for our society and environment? Well, studying Geology at UCL is the best way to answer all these questions and get hands-on experience about Minerals & Mininerals.

Natural Sciences:

Interweaving the sciences

Suitable for years 7-11: Online or in person at UCL - 30 minutes – 60 minutes

Interweaving the sciences

Love science but struggle to choose your favourite subject? Then UCL’s Natural Sciences course might be for you! This presentation will highlight its flexibility and wide range of options you can choose from to tailor the degree to you, your interests, and your preferred career. Try out some of the subjects you could choose to study through fun interactive games such as biomolecular Bingo, other topics include organic chemistry and neurophysiology!

What is matter and why does it matter?

Suitable for years 7-11: Online or in person at UCL - 30 minutes – 60 minutes

What is matter and why does it matter?

We all know what fluids are but how do they work? What is matter and why does it matter? This presentation will introduce some of the components covered when studying a Natural Science degree at UCL.

Risk & Disaster Reduction:

Global Humanitarian Studies: Can you make the right decision for humanity

Suitable for years 7-11: Online or in person at UCL - 30 minutes – 60 minutes

Can you make the right decision for humanity
We live in a world that is full of challenges to health, water, food, livelihoods, equality and so much more. UCL’s Global Humanitarian Studies course educates and trains future humanitarian leaders in the theory and practice of humanitarian action. This presentation will showcase the range of skills developed through this course: including research techniques, strategic planning and project management! What would you prioritise as an aid worker if an earthquake struck London today? Try out some realistic humanitarian simulations and challenge yourself to make the right decisions, quickly.

Science & Technology Studies:

Bridging Mind: Science and Beyond

Suitable for years 7-11: Online or in person at UCL - 30 minutes – 60 minutes

Bridging Mind: Science and Beyond
Science is more than science itself, and not only scientists work with science. If you love social science and want to gain some “non-scientific” insights into science, the UCL Science and Technology Department might be a good fit for you! This presentation will make a brief introduction to what we study in the department, what makes our degrees different from others, and future paths after graduation. Come and play in the interdisciplinary field of natural science, social science and humanity, and see how the emerging sciences and technologies shape our lives.
