About the event
UCL Risk & Disaster Reduction's (RDR) annual 'Careers Discovery Evening' is your chance to explore career and study paths in risk, disaster, business continuity, and humanitarian sectors. Undergraduate and postgraduate students, alumni and professionals across all levels will connect directly with organisations offering roles in these fields. Employers will showcase opportunities in their organisations and engage with students in a relaxed, one-to-one setting.
- Who can attend: Open to all UCL undergraduates and postgraduates, UCL staff and UCL RDR alumni.
- Cost: Attendance is free, but registration is required.
- Time: The event runs from 19:00 to 20:30. Drop in at any time to visit exhibitor stalls and speak with representatives.

- Faith Mwangi, Programmes and Operations Manager: Faith pursued her Bachelor’s of Arts degree at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and worked in the banking and financial industry first in Retail Banking and then in Digital Finance between 2014–2020.
Beneficiary of the Puay Tang Memorial Scholarship, Faith graduated with an MSc Sustainable Development from the Social Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at University of Sussex Business School. - International Emergencies Support Officer: I started at British Red Cross in the Refugee Services, Restoring Family Links and Anti-trafficking team, as a Deployment Coordinator for volunteers in the service. I moved into the International Department six months later, due to my interest in international humanitarian emergency responses. I started in the Ukraine Crisis Cell, deploying our staff to the response. After this, I secured a permanent role as an, where my work extends across many regions and technical areas. I have recently completed a secondment to the Ukraine Impacted Countries team, where I broadened my experience in long term programming.

Focuses on addressing systemic issues in humanitarian response through decentralised decision-making, rapid funding, and locally-led action. Operations span six continents, emphasising early intervention and community-led responses.

Impact: The Local Government Graduate Programme

International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI)
Founded in 2019, the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI) brings together a global coalition of change agents from across the engineering, investment, city, and philanthropic communities committed to bold action to solve the systemic problems that exist at the intersection of climate change, ecosystem degradation, ageing infrastructure, and underinvestment.
It is the global movement for engineering action on infrastructure sustainability, resilience, and climate change, placing engineers at the forefront of climate action and harnessing their ability to provide solutions when demand is urgent.
We are a small but growing organisation and will potentially have early careers opportunities in 2026/27.

Katie Momber, Senior Programme Manager: Katie is responsible for the coordination and delivery of projects and activities in ICSI's portfolio.
Prior to joining ICSI full-time in July 2024, Katie held a dual role of Climate Community Manager at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Programme Manager at ICSI. Katie worked in ICE’s Engineering Knowledge team for over 4 years, managing projects and networks of experts under the sustainability theme.
Her experience of working on sustainable and resilient infrastructure knowledge production at both ICE and ICSI has nurtured a keen interest in how collaboration across the value chain can promote infrastructure that delivers additional societal and environmental benefits. Katie’s previous professional experience has been in the UK Charity Sector, and prior to this she completed an MSc at UCL on Environment, Politics and Society, and also has a Human Geography BA.

The Met Office is the UK’s national weather service, combining meteorology and climate science with advanced technology to provide insights for safety, business operations, and environmental resilience.

- Tamara Janes, Science Lead within the International area of the Met Office: Tamara joined in 2011 following her MSc in Canada, where she focused on regional climate modelling over South Asia. Much of her career has centred on international development projects across seasonal and climate timescales, with a strong emphasis on translating science into actionable guidance.
She has led transdisciplinary research with community members and stakeholders, and supported capacity‑building across science and user communities in Zambia, South Africa, Namibia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Afghanistan, Thailand, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania. She completed a two‑year secondment with FCDO as a climate science adviser, supporting humanitarian response and preparedness. She is now an IPCC Lead Author on the Special Report on Climate Change and Cities.

- Bayes Ahmed, Associate Professor in Risk and Disaster Science: His research interests include disaster risk reduction (DRR), conflict and migration, climate change adaptation, community vulnerability assessment, climate mobility and geospatial data science. He works at the intersection of conflict and disaster, with a commitment to improving the living standards of displaced and stateless populations. He is particularly passionate about working with at‑risk communities and developing applied policy guidance to reduce the impacts of disasters. His teaching covers multi‑hazard risk mapping, statistics in the social sciences, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, research methods (both quantitative and qualitative), and vulnerability assessment. He leads the UCL–IDMC Disaster Displacement Research Hub.
- Philip Cunliffe, Associate Professor in International Relations: His academic expertise focuses on questions of sovereignty, international order, military intervention and liberal international conflict management. He also has research interests in critical social theory and International Relations theory. He completed his doctorate in War Studies at King’s College London, where his thesis examined developing countries’ personnel contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations between 1997 and 2007. In 2008 he was appointed to provide reports on Western Balkan politics for the Economist Intelligence Unit, and he became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2014. He has undertaken a wide range of roles within the academic community. From 2006 to 2010 he was one of the founding editors of the Routledge Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding, and from 2014 to 2020 he served as Editor‑in‑Chief of the Routledge journal International Peacekeeping. In 2018 he helped establish the ‘Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding’ working group of the British International Studies Association. He appears frequently in broadcast and print media, and is a co‑host of the Aufhebunga Bunga podcast.
- Roberto Gentile, Associate Professor in Crisis and Catastrophe Risk Modelling: His research focuses on advancing catastrophe risk modelling through the development and application of statistical and probabilistic tools. His work emphasises improvements in physical vulnerability models, multi‑hazard vulnerability, time‑dependent seismic fragility, lifecycle loss assessments, the integration of hazard insurance with structural retrofit, and optimal retrofit design under humanitarian constraints, particularly in developing countries. With a background as an earthquake structural engineer, he is also committed to advancing the seismic assessment and design of buildings and infrastructure, with a particular focus on concrete buildings and bridges. He is especially interested in direct loss‑based seismic design methodologies that aim for structures to achieve a defined earthquake loss performance under relevant seismic hazards, rather than simply remain within prescribed limits.
- Ilan Kelman, Professor of Disasters and Health: Ilan’s research focuses on disaster risk reduction, humanitarian response, and climate adaptation. His career path has included development work, a PhD in disaster studies, and research roles in academia and international organisations. He has remained in academia despite offers from the UN and private sector.
UCL Centre for Humanitarianism and Social Inclusion
The UCL Centre for Humanitarianism and Social Inclusion, based in the UCL Research Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, was established in 2022 to address some of the most pressing challenges faced by people affected by humanitarian crises, marginalisation, and social exclusion. The centre brings together interdisciplinary expertise to drive research, policy, and practice in humanitarian response and social justice.
The specialist Humanitarian Policy and Practice MSc provides training for careers in humanitarian response, international development, the United Nations, civil service, and programme management. - Maria Kett, Professor of Humanitarianism and Social Inclusion: Maria is a leading expert in health, human rights, education, climate change, and poverty alleviation, with extensive experience in humanitarian response and international development. She has conducted research across Africa and Asia, leading multiple projects on disability inclusion, social justice, and development policy. Maria initially trained as a nurse, before transitioning into anthropology, with a focus on health, wellbeing, and humanitarianism. She has worked extensively across disciplines within UCL and is a co-founder of the UCL Global Disability Innovation Hub.
