UCL Department of Science and Technology Studies is honoured to host a 2025 AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Award Lecture with 2024 Award winner Natasha Loder.
From Print to Prompts: What the Past Says About the Future of Science Journalism
What does the future hold for science journalism—and who gets to shape it? Drawing on 25 years in the media, this talk takes a personal and professional journey from the analog age of print through digital disruption to the dawn of AI. It will offer strong opinions, take a stab at sharp insights, and offer stories from the frontlines—such as how to get a bikini wax on expenses or end up with a Hobo name. Expect candid reflections on what journalism is for, where science writing sits within it, and what comes next.
Natasha Loder is The Economist's health editor, covering a wide range of topics in medicine, technology, pharma and science. Between 2011 and 2014 she worked as a foreign correspondent in Chicago, covering the Midwest, the bankruptcy of Detroit, education and agriculture. She has worked at The Economist since 2000, spending over a decade on the science desk, covering a wide range of subjects–including the rise of the private space industry and the carbon cowboys of Papua New Guinea.
