CIREN Seminar: The Future of Earth's Polar Regions: Modelling Approaches
3rd December 2025 1-2pm followed by networking over tea and coffee
Overview:
Earth’s polar regions are highly sensitive to climate change, whilst playing key roles in Earth’s energy budget and ocean circulation. This seminar will explore potential futures of the cryosphere, focusing on meltwater over ice shelves and sea ice. It will cover modelling, observational and AI approaches.
Two experts will give 15-minute presentations, followed by a panel discussion with audience questions. Participants can then network with others working on climate from across UCL over tea and coffee.
Speakers:
Sammie Buzzard, Assistant Professor and Director for Knowledge Exchange at the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling, University of Northumbria (profile)
Surface hydrology of Antarctica’s ice shelves, modelling how and where ice shelves may become vulnerable to collapse, Greenland sub-surface hydrology and snow and melt on Arctic Sea ice.
Simon Driscoll, Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, Cambridge University (profile)
Climate modelling including AI approaches and emulation, with a focus on the cryosphere including melt ponds on Arctic sea ice, weather forecasting and African/Asian meteorology.
Chair:
Sasha Montelli, Lecturer in Environmental Change at UCL Department of Geography (profile)
