The International Organisation for Migration’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) team in London are pleased to announce the first hackathon event with UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) happening the week of 5 June 2023 in line with UN Environment Day. DTM is the largest primary data collector on internal displacement within the humanitarian system, with active operations in over 90 countries worldwide. The event is an incarnation of the traditional Hackathon, an event focusing on team problem-solving and solution creation to help tackle global questions in environmental and natural hazard related displacement. This will be an exciting, inclusive event, encouraging students interested in GIS, quantitative methods and/or data visualisation to develop new ideas.
Student teams will be grouped on the day and will be supported by representatives from DTM. Teams will devise and implement solutions to pre-defined research questions in the areas of environmental and natural hazard related displacement. Solutions can be either in the form of data analysis or visualisation using quantitative and geospatial methods.
This event is an opportunity for you to gain first-hand insight into how data is collected and used in emergency humanitarian response, put skills gained in your courses into practice, as well as connect with new students within IRDR and with representatives from IOM DTM. Top performing participants will have their work showcased on the DTM global website and if they apply for IOM DTM London internship opportunities will be shortlisted for interview.
The event is free and open to anyone who has an interest in GIS, quantitative methods, and/or data visualisation and how these skills can be applied to environmental displacement. Participants must bring their laptops. The event takes place in person and will not be recorded.

IOM DTM – UCL IRDR Environmental Displacement Hackathon winners
As the winners of the hackathon, Jasmine Andean, and Melanie Larre, both pursuing a Global Humanitarian Studies undergraduate degree at UCL, had the opportunity to develop their hackathon idea further together with DTM London from August to September. Their research focused on a comparative analysis between media reports of floods and DTM’s Emergency Tracking Tool (ETT) data on internal displacement driven by flooding in Burundi in 2021. Their aim was to determine whether there were differences in the relationship between the severity of an event and the resulting internal displacement across affected locations.
