Performing Warnings: A co-creation workshop

Overview:

This event brings the unconventional creativity and co-creational talent of Pablo Suarez, Ph.D. with contributing artists including Hameed “Ham” Khan and Eugenia Rojo (Argentina), for an afternoon of exploration into how to communicate risk and uncertainty in warnings, closely examining the performative role of warnings, and exploring how to better devise warnings to enhance communication and generate action by various stakeholders. Artists such as Pablo work with experts and partners to develop and deploy original performative and artistic skills and tools to examine topics that are often difficult to grasp. In this session Pablo will guide us through several practical activities that will generate invaluable perspectives that will help sharpen the focus around what is needed to enhance warnings for all hazards and threats. This event provides the opportunity to meet others working in the field of warnings and will be followed up with a social reception to enable networking and a sharing of ideas in the hope to continue to foster collaboration. The aim of the workshop is to generate a proposal area to focus an extensive project around performing warnings.

The UCL Warning Research Centre welcomes researchers, students, practitioners, policymakers, the media, businesses, and other stakeholders to attend.

Virtual attendees will be sent Zoom links via email to join the session prior to the event. Recordings will be made available via the WRC social media channels after the event.

Speakers

Pablo Suarez

Pablo is a researcher on disaster risks turned humanitarian worker, innovator, game designer, and creator of serious-yet-fun processes to inspire collaborative learning, thinking, and action. He is Honorary Associate Professor at UCL’s Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy, Innovation Lead at the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre as well as Artist in Residence at the National University of Singapore Lloyd’s Register Foundation Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk. Pablo is also a Visiting Fellow at the Boston University Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, and Senior Policy Fellow at the University of Cambridge Centre for the Study of Existential Risk.

Eugenia Rojo

Born in Argentina in 1976 at the beginning of the last military dictatorship, she is a director, writer, actor and co-founder of Hamishibai - Cardboard Theatre. Eugenia is also a yoga and ayurveda educationalist and flamenco dancer and instructor.

Hameed Khan

Hameed was born in England in 1957, and since 1984 he has lived mostly in Argentina. He is co-director, co- writer, actor, designer and co-founder of Hamishibai – Cardboard Theatre. He has worked as a cartoonist for many UK national newspapers, US media and Argentinian outlets.
