Defining data - a Turing engagement event
What is data? This workshop, supported by the Alan Turing Institute, will explore definitions of data & how this affects use and governance
Discussions of data, its uses and its implications for society are widespread. But what do we mean when we talk about data? Does information have to have particular qualities to be classified as data and is the way we think about data different to how we use it? And what do these qualities mean for the way we manage, regulate and live with data?
In this workshop supported by the Alan Turing Institute, we will be joined by leading researchers representing a range of disciplines and perspectives who will explore the question of how we define data. Our panel will also reflect upon what different definitions, understandings and practices might mean for governance, regulation and use of data.
