Black History Month Event

Please join us for our Black History Month event on Thursday 6th October 1-2 pm in Kathleen Lonsdale Building room 127 and virtually.

The event will be led by award-winning EDI activist and PhD student Cassius Morrison (UCL Earth Sciences/Natural History Museum) and will be an opportunity for members of staff and students of all races and ethnicities to learn, share and find positive ways forward together.

The event will comprise a two-part discussion, as detailed below.

Intersectionality, Discrimination, and Bullying in academia

What is intersectionality?

• The need for unity by all
• The lack of unity can perpetuate the problems, division and discrimination

The power balance and how marginalisation and bullying can arise

• Need for accountability

Some of the challenges faced by minorities including from Black Origins

• Personal experiences

Everyone can make a difference

• False narrative of good and bad based on characteristics- i.e., demonisation of certain groups
• Allies are essential for change
• Need for open and space discussions, without cancelling people who genuinely are seeking to be better
• Making a difference within our means, at every stage of one’s career
