How Does A Battery Work? Four Systems of Battery Science in the 19th Century 

In this talk, Professor Hasok Chang will give an overview of the complex history of the field of science originating from Volta’s invention of the battery in 1799.

This was an area of what Professor Chang calls “amalgamated science”, most instructively analysed in terms of “systems of practice” rather than just theories or instruments.

The pattern of development in 19th-century “battery science” was strongly pluralistic. Professor Chang will articulate four different systems of practice that developed side-by-side and in productive interaction with each other.

This event will be held in person in the Gustave Tuck Lecture Theatre in the UCL Main Building. Registration via Eventbrite is required to attend the event in person.
