The session will examine factors that impact on our ability to prepare for an emergency and will then explore psychological factors that can influence evacuation behaviours. Secondly, Dr Robinson will outline studies that implement a psychobiological approach to explore responses to two simulated disasters; a fire search and rescue exercise and a helicopter ditching using the Helicopter Underwater Evacuation Training (HUET). Finally, she will outline work on the consequences of trauma exposure, especially focusing on the factors that influence post-traumatic growth.

About the speaker

Sarita Robinson, University of Central Lancashire

Dr Sarita Robinson is the Deputy Head of School for Psychology and Computer Science. As well as having a leadership role, Sarita is passionate about her research and has spent the last 20 years investigating how people respond in life-threatening situations, using a cognitive neuropsychology and psychobiology approach. After completing her Master’s degree in Cognitive Sciences at the University of Manchester, Sarita went on to complete her PhD in Cognitive and Neuroimmune changes in human survival. Since the completion of her PhD in 2004, Sarita has been based at the University of Central Lancashire, United Kingdom, and has continued her research in the survival field working with both UK based and international clients.
