What is NES?
Neurodivergence in Earth Sciences (NES) is a group dedicated to celebrating and supporting neurodivergent individuals within the geosciences. We cultivate an inclusive and diverse environment where neurodivergent staff and students can experience a true sense of belonging, flourish in their academic and professional journeys, and thrive free from discrimination.

NES Mentor Scheme
NES is committed to supporting, inspiring, mentoring, and fostering a sense of community. As part of our mission, we are proud to announce the launch of our mentoring scheme.
If you would like to offer your support as an NES mentor, or if you would benefit from the guidance of a mentor, you can sign up to participate by contacting us. We will then facilitate introductions between suitable mentors and mentees.

Spotlight on Research: Understanding and Supporting Neurodiversity in Geoscience
Several researchers and institutions are actively working to better understand the experiences of neurodivergent individuals in the geosciences and to develop more inclusive practices.
Challenges and Opportunities in Geoscience Education
Recent studies highlight both the challenges and unique strengths of neurodivergent students in the geosciences. While traditional teaching methods and fieldwork can present barriers related to sensory processing and communication differences, neurodivergent individuals often bring exceptional skills in pattern recognition, creativity, and attention to detail. Research emphasizes the need for pedagogical adjustments, such as flexible assessment methods and the incorporation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, to create a more equitable and effective learning environment for all.
Promoting Inclusive Fieldwork
Organizations like the International Association for Geoscience Diversity (IAGD ) are at the forefront of promoting accessible and inclusive fieldwork opportunities. Their work focuses on developing best practices and providing resources to ensure that geoscientists with a wide range of abilities and learning styles can fully participate in this essential aspect of the Earth sciences
This ongoing work is crucial for fostering a geoscience community where neurodivergent individuals can thrive and contribute their unique talents to advancing our understanding of the Earth.
