Leadership in collaborations
Imagine a collaboration where everyone operates at their best. The Leading in Collaborations program brings this overlooked piece to research, with proven results.
The Leadership Gap in Science
Collaboration is essential for discovery, but as projects grow, so do the challenges of leadership. Skills like communication, decision-making, and conflict management are critical, yet underdeveloped in traditional research training or reserved only for senior academics. Traditional leadership programs focus on hierarchical organisations, leaving a gap when it comes to the distributed, non-hierarchical structures of international collaborations, where even early-career researchers may be entrusted with significant responsibility.
Fundamental Leadership Elements
Development is rooted in the practically based, universally applicable Resilient Leaders Elements (RLE) platform. RLE’s proven leadership programs have been successful in a variety of contexts as they support participants in building sustainable resilient leadership muscle. The core aspects focus on:
What I Do
- Clarity of Direction – having a vision and realistic strategy, aligning others to it, and staying determined through uncertainty.
- Resilient Decision-Making – making creative, robust, and versatile choices, with confidence to adapt when things don’t go as planned.
Who I Am
- Awareness – understanding yourself, appreciating the diversity of others, and reading the environment to act effectively.
- Leadership Presence – acting with authenticity, serving others, and intentionally inspiring achievement and cohesion.
Every leader has unique challenges: Through an innovative assessment process, your development plan is tailored to support and challenge you allowing you to take responsibility for your development and get the most out of your time.
Pilot Success & Participant Feedback

"I basically learned everything about leadership with this program. There is a need to take initiative. We won't be always perfect but we learn and grow." -Ana Peixoto, ATLAS Jet Definitions and MC Calibration Convener (2023-2025)
"It solidified my understanding of the importance of team and team culture. It is was a super great program." - Haider Abidi, ATLAS H->ZZ Convener (2022-2024)
"It solidified my understanding of the importance of team and team culture. It is was a super great program." - Haider Abidi, ATLAS H->ZZ Convener (2022-2024)
"The program highlighted many different facets I wasn't aware of, in particular the different collaborative spaces and addressing indivuals needs in a team!" -Daniela Köck, ATLAS Electroweak SUSY Convener (2023 - 2025)
"This was a fantastic programme. It gave me the structure to reflect on my experiences through my career and shape them into a positive model for my own leadership. It was also great to connect with upcoming leaders, hear their perspectives, and discuss how more senior people like me can support them." -Gavin Hesketh, Mu3e Physics Coordinator, Muon g-2 EDM Search Convener
"I learned that leadership in collaboration isn’t about control, but about creating clarity and trust: I try to do this by aligning the group around a shared purpose while making sure everybody is heard." -Valentina Vecchio, ATLAS Flavour Tagging Convener (2024-2026), Calibration Convener (2022-2024)
"It is not easy to shift from a daily working routine to a management routine. Yet this is exactly what we do. This program helped me take a step back, and approach management with the broader perspective." -Francesco Di Bello, ATLAS Flavour Tagging Convener (2022-2024)
"This program gave me the space to reflect on leadership and helped me learn how to best support others so they can perform better with greater ease and clarity." -Guglielmo Frattari, ATLAS Tracking and Vertexing for Prompt and Displaced Particles Convener (2022-2024)
"It helped me to understand that I am in a position from which I could help to get the best from people." -Yesenia Hernandez Jimenez, ATLAS Higgs and Light Resonance Searches Convener (2023-2025)
"I learned how to give more space to other to let them grow!" -Ludovica Aperio Bella, ATLAS Egamma Convener (2022-2024)
"Having an opportunity to step back, reflect and connect with others was really refreshing. I gained a lot of actionable perspective about myself and was empowered to make improvements to my working life." -Sam Van Stroud, ATLAS Flavour Tagging Algorithms Convener (2023-2025)
"'How do you feel at your best?' That simple question opened my eyes to our shared potential. It stayed with me and inspired me to build 'collective spaces' in ATLAS di-Higgs and beyond where teams can thrive together." -Valentina Cario, ATLAS Di-Higgs Convener (2022-2025)
"It was great! All of ATLAS needs to be taking training like this." -Dan Guset, ATLAS Flavour Tagging Convener (2023-2025)
"It was formative as I didn't think too much about leadership beforehand. Having some time set apart to think about leadership itself was very valuable." -Brian Moser, ATLAS Flavour Tagging Calibrations Convener (2022-2024)
"Formalising leadership was very helpful. I want to bring this to the wider community so they can benefit too." Karolos Potamianos, ATLAS ITk Strip Integration Coordinator (2022-2027)
Your 12-Week Leadership Journey
Assess, practice & develop your leadership!
Growth takes focused effort over time, but even small changes can make a big difference. Over 12 weeks, 20 participants are coached through a program combining in-person and online learning to create a community of practice. Participants learn to support one another and grow through personalised challenge journeys.
- Kick-off workshops (2 half-days, preferably in person): immersive training, peer networking, and hands-on application of RLE tools.
- Workshops (2–3 half-days in 10 weeks, online or in person): structured sessions introducing leadership elements, group discussion, and collaborative work.
- Final session (half-day, online or hybrid): consolidating learning, sharing insights, and planning next leadership steps
- Clinics (2-3 one-hour sessions between workshops, online or in person): group reflection, accountability, and community building.
- Personalised challenges (~30 min/week): guided by self- and peer feedback, participants test new behaviours in real settings.
- Peer coaching & learning groups (~30 min/week): practicing leadership in supportive circles, building confidence and accountability.
Program Highlights
The program is based on the Resilient Leaders Development Programme (RLDP™), a self- and feedback-assessment that shows you where you stand right now. It generates a tailored, individualised development plan that supports and challenges you to take responsibility for your growth. The program concludes with measures of impact and progress.
Participation in this program is a two-fold journey: deriving value and contributing value. We believe that every participant not only gains from the training but also brings unique insights and experiences to share. This reciprocal exchange is at the heart of buddy system coaching, where participants pair up to enrich each other’s learning journey.
Unlike one-off workshops that fade quickly, this program builds leadership muscle through sustained practice. The mix of clinics, personalised challenges, and peer coaching ensures participants have the time, space, and support to experiment with new behaviours, reflect on outcomes, and embed real change in their daily work.
Is this training for me?
Quite simply: Yes!
Self-leadership is essential at every stage, but the Leading in Collaborations training program will have the biggest impact on:
- Coordinators managing multiple groups or conveners.
- Group/Activity Conveners overseeing multiple sub-groups.
- Sub-group Conveners guiding several team leaders.
- Team Leaders responsible for large teams (e.g. analysis contacts for 50+ people).
- PhD, Post-docs, Professors, and Engineers working in a team.
This program is for you if you want to:
- Learn about leadership in a structured way from certified trainers.
- Be empowered to lead a team without direct authority.
- Embed leadership development as a practice within your community.
- Create a culture where people are engaged and confident in leadership matters
Meet the Lead Facilitator
Certified RLE facilitator and experienced physics leader, Gabriel Facini brings his experience in one of the largest scientific collaborations in the world to guide participants through the program. His leadership background in ATLAS ensures the training is directly relevant to the realities of international science collaborations. An RLE facilitator’s role is to act as a coach to help participants unlock their own leadership strengths and apply the RLE tools to real challenges. This allows them to continue to grow and develop even after the program is completed.
By equipping researchers with leadership skills, we not only help them thrive but also get more bang for every research buck spent.
