Study chemistry with us as a single subject, or as a major subject with mathematics or management studies. UCL chemistry degrees can be studied as a BSc over three years, or an MSci over four. We also offer a four-year international programme with the chance to study at an overseas university, as well as at UCL.
Chemistry is recognised as one of the most exciting and successful contributors to the UK economy in areas such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and nanotechnology. So whichever degree you go for, you can look forward to excellent career prospects across wide-ranging industries, as a UCL-trained chemist.
BSc Chemistry
This three-year programme offers a complete education in chemistry, covering all the important areas of the subject.
MSci Chemistry
This four-year programme offers an additional year on top of the Chemistry BSc, in which you may specialise further and deepen your knowledge.
BSc Chemistry with Mathematics
This BSc offers the opportunity to gain an understanding of the origins of chemical behaviour, while exploring exciting developments at the interface of chemistry with the other physical sciences.
MSci Chemistry with Mathematics
This four-year programme offers an extra year on top of the Chemistry with Mathematics BSc in which to study chemistry and its relationship with other disciplines in greater depth.
BSc Chemistry with Management Studies
This course is ideal if you are considering a career in management and are seeking to develop managerial skills. The core of the programme's chemistry component is the same as the Chemistry BSc.
MSci Chemistry with Management Studies
This four-year programme offers an additional year on top of the Chemistry with Management Studies BSc in which to investigate both disciplines in greater depth.
MSci Chemistry (International Programme)
This four-year programme provides a complete education in chemistry together with the option of taking modules in other areas, and the opportunity to spend a year abroad.
Study chemistry with us as a three-year BSc or a four-year MSci. The first two years of study are identical. If you’re not sure which to go for, it’s worth applying for the MSci in the first instance, as you can transfer to the BSc at any time during your first three years.
If you decide to carry on into year four (on the MSci), you’ll take modules in masters level topics in cutting edge chemistry and work with one of our internationally leading research groups to produce a novel piece of scientific research.
Whether you’re using machine learning to predict what materials to explore for batteries, designing a new drug delivery system, or determining the mechanism of reactions that happen in deep space, the work you undertake with us will help to push forward current chemistry knowledge and understanding.
The quality of the teaching we offer at UCL Chemistry is regularly recognised with university and national awards. For example, our lab team won an RSC prize for their remote lab during the pandemic, much of which has been folded into how we teach laboratory skills now back in the lab itself.
Our first year Air Pollution project also won UCL and RSC prizes for our engagement with the community and bringing research into the heart of our teaching. As a first year, you’ll get to take part in piece of scientific research and go out and communicate your findings to local primary schools, building valuable lab-based and communication skills for your career.

MSci Chemistry
“Living in London whilst also studying at one of the best universities in the country is amazing. Not only that, I’ve had the chance to work with some incredible academics and make some amazing friends.”
Kam Poon
MSci Chemistry
“The most surprising thing I discovered is how much the staff care about students, they work so hard to address any issues we have and are always looking for ways they can improve the course.”
