Career path
Harry is an Assistant Underwriter working in Property Treaty and Retrocession, supporting insurers and reinsurers in managing exposure to major natural catastrophes. His role involves interpreting catastrophe‑modelling outputs, assessing risk across peak perils such as hurricanes, earthquakes and windstorms, and contributing to underwriting decisions that help organisations prepare for large‑scale hazard events.
Alongside the technical analysis, Harry regularly collaborates with clients and brokers, combining quantitative insight with clear communication.
Learning from the teaching staff about the opportunities available to alumni gave me the awareness to know that (re)insurance was an attractive career path which would utilise much of the content offered within the course.
Life at UCL
Harry valued the MSc’s strong quantitative focus, particularly modules in catastrophe risk modelling and disaster risk financing. These provided the academic foundation he now applies in underwriting.
He also appreciated learning alongside peers from a wide range of professional and academic backgrounds, many of whom were pursuing opportunities in the same sector.
