  • What I Wish I Knew Before Coming to UCL: A Friendly Guide from My Journey

Hey there! If you’re reading this, you’re probably gearing up for your own UCL adventure. Having been there and done that, I’m excited to share some personal insights and tips that I wish I had known before stepping onto campus. From navigating the sprawling grounds to finding the perfect balance between study and play, I’ve learned a lot along the way. So, let’s dive into the things that can make joining UCL a little smoother and a lot more enjoyable.

Finding Your Way: Navigating the UCL Campus

UCL’s campus can feel like a maze at first, but don’t worry—you’ll soon find your way around. Start by picking up a campus map and downloading the UCL GO app, which is a lifesaver for locating buildings and finding out about events. Take a day or two to explore different areas, and don’t be afraid to get a little lost; it’s part of the adventure! Also, make use of the university’s digital resources and attend the orientation sessions. They’re not just for show—they’re genuinely helpful for getting acquainted with your new home.

Balancing Act: Mastering Time Management

Juggling academics, social life, and self-care can be challenging, but it’s definitely doable with a bit of planning. Create a schedule that includes not just your classes and study time, but also time for relaxation and social activities. Remember, it’s okay to take breaks and indulge in hobbies. Use planner apps to keep track of deadlines and events. Personally, I stand by Notion and Google Calendar to keep track of my deadlines and events. Notion helps me organise my lecture notes, project timelines, and to-do lists all in one place, while Google Calendar syncs everything and sends helpful reminders. The combination keeps me on top of things without feeling overwhelmed. And if you find yourself overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to reach out to your peers or academic advisors for support.

Academic Hacks: Succeeding in Your Studies

Here’s a secret: excelling at UCL isn’t just about studying harder; it’s about studying smarter. Take advantage of the academic resources available to you, from library services to study groups. Build a good relationship with your professors and academic advisors—they’re more approachable than you might think and can offer valuable guidance. Also, get to know the various study spaces around campus. Whether it’s a quiet corner in the library or a cosy café, finding the right spot can make a big difference in your productivity. My go-to places are the Science Library (which is always buzzing with productivity) and the serene Senate House Library. Both have amazing atmospheres that help me stay focused and energised.

Social Scene: Building Connections and Getting Involved

One of the best parts about UCL is its vibrant student community. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you—seek them out! Join clubs and societies that interest you, attend social events, and engage with your fellow students. These activities not only help you make friends but also enrich your university experience. One of the best decisions I made was joining the Drama Society. It quickly became a space where I not only met amazing people but also got to be creative and learn new skills. Fast forward, and now I’m the Workshops Officer! Don’t be shy about introducing yourself and making connections; everyone’s in the same boat and eager to meet new people.

Starting university is a big transition, and while it can be overwhelming at times, it’s also incredibly rewarding. Embrace the journey with an open mind and a willingness to explore. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. I hope these tips help you navigate your own UCL experience with a bit more ease and a lot more excitement. Enjoy every moment, and welcome to the UCL community!
