Career path
Khonsa’s work focuses on disaster governance, flood and tsunami risk and resilience policy, examining how institutions prepare for and respond to complex hazards.
Her research draws on empirical analysis of flood risk and governance systems, exploring how policies and institutional arrangements shape disaster preparedness and long-term resilience. Through this work she applies interdisciplinary methods to understand how governance frameworks can better support communities facing increasing flood risk.
Being a researcher allows me to constantly update myself with the latest knowledge, think and read critically, work with numbers, explore new analytical tools and methods, and connect with experts from around the world.
Life at UCL
During her studies, Khonsa particularly valued modules on catastrophe modelling, data analysis, and digital public health. Coming from a quantitative background, these modules helped broaden her understanding of risk beyond hazards and vulnerability to also include uncertainty and exposure. She also valued UCL’s central London location, being among institutions that have played a major role in the development of both insurance and public health.
Throughout her time at RDR, Khonsa attended international conferences and undertook an internship. With the support of her supervisor and the department more broadly, she was able to publish her MSc research as a journal article and travel to Japan in 2023 to present her research at an international conference.
