Why did you choose your degree?
I have wanted to study Chemistry since before I can remember! I have always found the subject fascinating and wanted to gain a greater understanding of the world around me.
Why did you apply to study at UCL?
UCL was my first choice as I thought it was amazing how many female academics they had within the department compared to other Universities. Also, I loved the diverse campus within the heart of London.
What is the best thing about your course?
The best part of this course is how supportive the academics are, as well as your fellow peers. The academics keep the content very interesting and challenging but are always there to help you when you’re struggling. You can tell they really care about the students which makes a difference. The sense of community throughout the years has really helped me through this degree and has enhanced my experience here at UCL.
What do you find interesting about your field of study and what inspires you?
I find organometallic chemistry very interesting, which is what I’ve decided to do my research project on this year. I think it’s incredible how changing one small part of a molecule can have a huge impact on its behaviour, and finding the perfect balance is a challenge I’m enjoying studying. The academics and students I’ve been lucky enough to work with inspire me every day. The sheer hard work and resilience of the people around me shows me how much you can achieve when you apply yourself.
Do you think studying at UCL Chemistry is a good investment?
Definitely. Living in London whilst also studying at one of the best Universities in the country is amazing. Not only that, I’ve had the chance to work with some incredible academics, as well as having met some amazing friends which has made it all worth it.
What is it like studying in London and how do you think it has benefited your studies?
When speaking to people at other Universities it sounds like London has been a very different experience. However, I feel like I’ve build a family here which makes me want to stay in the city following my degree. It’s amazing living in such a diverse and vibrant city whilst also getting to study a subject that you love.
What are your career plans once you’ve completed your current programme of study at UCL?
Currently, I would like to stay working within a lab in an industrial environment rather than within academia. I’ve enjoyed working in the labs over the entirety of my degree, especially now that I’m doing my own research project, and I definitely wouldn’t want to stop.
Is there anything else you would like to say about your time at UCL Chemistry?
My time studying Chemistry at UCL has been the best 3 and half years of my life. I think the department is exceptional, I’ve had so many opportunities to widen my knowledge outside of lectures and have enjoyed every minute of it. I will always be so grateful for my time here and will be sad to leave it.
