Alumni Spotlight: Laura Corbett
"It was...an incredible experience to work on my thesis with the exoplanet group at MSSL; I felt like an honorary academic, and enjoyed visiting the lab and sitting in on group meetings."
How did you decide that the Space Science and Engineering: Space Science MSc at UCL was right for you?
I have a bachelor’s degree in Physics and Astrophysics, and was looking for a course that would expand upon this knowledge whilst giving me an excellent grounding in all aspects of the space sector. I knew, by reading the course content and future career prospects, that this course would do exactly that, and would help me to understand whether my future lay in academia, the space industry, engineering, or something I had never even considered before. My decision was also aided by the fact that I would be taught and supported by professors at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory (MSSL), a world leader in space research and instrumentation.
What did you enjoy the most from your programme?
Honestly, I enjoyed the space science modules the most! I didn’t realise how much I had missed learning about these topics. It was also an incredible experience to work on my thesis with the exoplanet group at MSSL; I felt like an honorary academic, and enjoyed visiting the lab and sitting in on group meetings.
How would you describe your overall experience at UCL?
Inspiring and fun! I made friends for life, expanded my knowledge of the space sector, learned from experts in the field, and honed the hard and soft skills needed for my future career. Plus, it was such a pleasure to experience London for a year.
