Funding Opportunities

We run several regular funding schemes to support staff and opportunities for students.  Details of deadlines and how to apply are usually circulated via email, newsletters and the MAPS Teaching Interest Network (MAPS TIN).

MAPS Education Funding: Small grant funding for training and collaboration for education-focussed staff

Funding of up to £1,000 per applicant is available to support education-related activities that enhance the practice or dissemination of pedagogy and/or enhancement of student experience and engagement within the MAPS faculty. Examples of the types of activities that could be supported are:

  • Visiting another institution to learn about innovative pedagogical practice or approaches to student support or engagement.
  • Inviting a leading practitioner in discipline-specific education research to visit UCL to give a talk or workshop.
  • Attendance at a conference focussed on education or student engagement
  • Training or continual professional development opportunities related to education or pedagogy.
  • Exchange visits to establish or maintain a collaboration in education research, including to work on data analysis and writing education papers.

Please get in touch if you wish to discuss the eligibility of a particular activity for this funding.

Who is eligible to apply?

All MAPS staff are eligible to apply but we will prioritise funding for those in teaching-focussed positions: Associate Lecturers (Teaching); Lecturers (Teaching); Associate Professor (Teaching) and Professor (Teaching) as well as Education and Student Experience-focussed Professional and Technical services staff.

MAPS Education Funding: Student Opportunities and Success Fund

The funding should be spent on activities that provide co- or extra-curricular opportunities for undergraduate and taught postgraduate students. Some examples of the types of activities that would fit within the scope of this call are:

  • Holding a networking event for a student cohort.
  • Subsidising student attendance at discipline-specific competitive events e.g. Olympiads.
  • Student-led or staff-student partnership events such as hackathons, workshops, or conferences being hosted within a department.

What the funding will not cover:

  • Student social events.
  • Student Society activities and events.
  • Internships or bursaries / stipends.
  • Research conference attendance for an individual student.

A maximum of £800 is available per application (note that this is per event not per student).

Who can apply for funding?

  • Applications can be made by any member of staff within MAPS.
  • To ensure that funding is fairly and transparently distributed, please discuss the application with your Department Education Lead before submission. This is to ensure we fund opportunities that align with departmental priorities and there is awareness of what is being funded.
  • We cannot accept applications directly from students.

Student Partnership Projects

Funds permitting, we try to fund several student-staff partnership projects every year (similar format to Changemakers projects). We are particularly interested in project ideas around student understanding of academic integrity and assessment; student feedback literacy (how students receive and use feedback) and addressing the Expectation Gap. Please get in touch to discuss any ideas informally.

Support for Education Research

In previous schemes we have supported the purchase of textbooks that support Education Research. We will continue to consider requests for books and similar resources on an ad hoc basis. We plan to support a limited number of student internships for summer 2025 to explore the use of eye-tracking technology in education research.

Do you have an idea for an Education-related project?

If so, please contact Katherine Holt with a brief outline of the project and the funding required. Further focussed funding opportunities will be posted here in due course.
