Impact of powder quality on laser powder bed fusion process
Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technology fuses powder particles into components, layer-by-layer, directly from a digital file. Powder recycling (or reuse) is a key driver to make LPBF sustainable and cost-effective, however, it remains unclear the impact of recycled and reused powder quality, e.g. oxygen pick-up, powder contaminations, and moisture, during LPBF and powder handling. This project uses powder condition analysis technology and reveal the impact of powder quality on surface dynamics using ultra-fast in situ X-ray imaging. The expected research outcomes will help end-users to decide when powders should be reused, recycled or discarded.
This project is in collaboration with Carpenter Additive (CA), a world-leading powder manufacturer with a 20% global powder market shares.
