Professor Sir Malcolm Grant Scholarship
Following 10 years of exceptional leadership, Professor Malcolm Grant will be retiring as President and Provost of UCL in September 2013. He has presided over a remarkable transformation of a wonderful institution. It is indisputably London's Global University - now recognised as one of the world's great universities. He will be taking on new challenges; most notably that of chairing the new NHS Commissioning Board for England.
The UCL community worldwide has been enthusiastic in helping to establish a new scholarship in his name as a retirement gift. Nearly 100 alumni, staff and friends have contributed so far. The fund has reached £500,000 and continues to grow. This includes a match of £100,000 pledged by UCL to increase the impact of donations made in Professor Grant's honour.
The Professor Sir Malcolm Grant Scholarship will be awarded annually to promising students from the UK and around the world who demonstrate financial need. Both undergraduate and Masters students will be eligible to apply, with preference given to those who show leadership as well as have financial need. Grant Scholars will receive support for fees and London living costs, ensuring that they can thrive at UCL free from undue financial pressure. The inaugural scholars will be selected for the 2013-14 academic year.
A unique aspect of funding a scholarship at UCL is the opportunity to meet the student receipients. As part of this gift from the UCL community, Professor Grant will be invited back to meet the Grant Scholars and be kept apprised of their progress. After ten years, there will be a cadre of Grant Scholars from all around the globe who have earned their UCL degree and are pursuing their dreams with gratitude to the UCL community.
A Fitting Legacy
Throughout his career, Professor Grant has been committed to the student population, and espouses the UCL ethos that no student should miss out on a world-class education because of financial hardship.
Back in 2003, Professor Grant identified the big issue facing UCL as “ensuring we don’t miss out on really capable students”. This remains one of our constant priorities. The Professor Malcolm Grant Scholarship is a wonderful legacy of Provost’s contributions to the University community.
The scholarship will be presented to Professor Grant at his retirement party for UCL staff and friends in June 2013. We will have a special donor board at the event which will list all contributors to date (apart from anonymous donors).
We invite all those who have followed, celebrated, and taken pride in the progress of UCL during the past ten years to contribute to this special scholarship fund.
