As part of our commitment to offering Londoners more access to educational and employment opportunities, UCL invited local school pupils to spend a week here on work placements.

Students at UCL

“Life changing…enlightening…great fun….a wonderful opportunity….”

These were just some of the reactions of secondary school students who took part in a work experience programme at UCL.

Twenty students from Camden-based UCL Academy – a school supported by the university – spent a week at various departments, gaining a taste of working life and picking up some useful life skills for the future.

Activities included:

  • conducting interviews
  • website design and creating content
  • video production
  • analytics
  • running social media accounts
  • proofreading and editing documents
  • office management skills
  • archiving and filing

Fourteen departments participated in the programme, including Computer Science, Institute of Health Informatics, Science and Technology Studies, UCL Culture, School of Management, Communications and Marketing, and UCL Innovation & Enterprise. At Innovation & Enterprise, students were able to talk to budding entrepreneurs based in the Hatchery at BaseKX.

At the conclusion of their experience, several of the students said they plan to study for a degree at UCL.
