The Poxiviridae consist of a big family of complex DNA viruses that have a wide tissue tropism and are broadly distributed across the world. Among them, we find Vaccinia virus (VV), which was once used to eradicate smallpox and serves nowadays as the prototypic poxvirus for laboratory research. In my PhD, I am trying to find novel mechanisms of virus-host interactions as well as defence mechanisms that Vaccinia may be using to control host cells in order to escape from the immune system and be able to infect effectively.
