Research synopsis

My research focuses on the use of ‘deep learning’, a form of artificial intelligence, to improve and simplify bioimaging workflows in microscopy. Deep learning is a relatively novel and extremely versatile tool that can be used for many bioimaging tasks, from image annotation to object detection to super-resolution, often exceeding the capabilities of other computer algorithms and in some cases, even human experts. However, there are still limitations, both in the performance and accessibility of this technology which makes it difficult to understand and use for many biologists. In my research, I explore how deep learning can be made more accessible for the biology community and how the quality of predictions made by deep learning techniques can be interpreted and improved by users. The goal of this research is to democratize the use of this technology in such a way that its potential can be exploited by any biologist.
