Prof Alison Lloyd appointed new Director of MRC LMCB at UCL

We are pleased to welcome Alison Lloyd, Professor of Cell Biology, as the new Director of the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology at UCL.

Professor Lloyd said: “I am delighted to have been appointed as Director of the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology at UCL. The MRC LMCB at UCL has a proud history of being at the forefront of world-leading cell biology research and for the training of current and future leaders in this field. I aim to build on these strengths, while developing a new focus on tissue biology.

The basic unit of life is the cell, however in animals, most cells function within tissues with the breakdown of tissue function the basis of disease and ageing. So, while the study of individual cells is still critical to understand a myriad of cellular process, our goal will be to push this understanding towards the tissue context. This requires study across scales and a multidisciplinary approach, which are current strengths of the MRC LMCB at UCL, thus providing a firm foundation for this approach. Building upon these strengths with a high level of innovation and technological development should create an exciting new focus for the future of the MRC LMCB at UCL.”

Professor Geraint Rees, Dean of UCL Faculty of Life Sciences said: “Alison is an outstanding scientist and brings a compelling vision to extend the work of the MRC LMCB at UCL to encompass tissue biology while maintaining and enhancing the core scientific and technological expertise of this world-renowned cell biology Institute. I am looking forward to working with her at this exciting time for the MRC LMCB at UCL as it continues to deliver scientific excellence and national leadership in this important research area.”

Professor Fiona Watt, Executive Chair of the MRC, added: “I am happy to welcome Professor Lloyd as the new Director of the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology at UCL. Alison is a remarkable researcher who will build on the exemplary work of Professor Mark Marsh, who is retiring as Director after 14 years, and shape the future of the MRC LMCB at UCL.
