Ukrainian Action and FLS raise £7K to support Ukrainian veteran rehab programmes

20 May 2025

UCL Community update: £7,000 raised to support Ukrainian veteran rehabilitation programmes — thank you to all who helped turn awareness into action.

Together with Ukrainian Action and the Faculty of Life Sciences, we were delighted to co-host a powerful screening of "Taras" at the UCL Bloomsbury Theatre — a moving short documentary about a Ukrainian snowboarder turned soldier, whose journey from trauma on the frontlines to healing in the Carpathian Mountains inspired the Ukrainian Action’s Heroes Rehabilitation Programme.

Taras has already been screened at several North American festivals and was a finalist at the Banff Mountain Film Festival in Canada. More importantly, it’s raising global awareness of the urgent mental and physical health needs of Ukraine’s war veterans — over 100,000 of whom are amputees.

Thanks to an incredible turnout and generous donations, the event raised £7,000, which will go directly toward the Ukrainian Action Heroes Rehabilitation Programme in the Carpathian Mountains — offering healing, recovery, and hope to those who’ve given so much.

We’re grateful to all who joined us — staff, students, alumni, the wider public — and especially to our inspiring panel of speakers:

  • Dominic Nicholls, Associate Editor of Defence The Telegraph & co-host of the award winning podcast "Ukraine: The Latest"
  • Oksana Pyzik, Global Health Advisor & Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice & Policy, UCL School of Pharmacy
  • Jeffrey Hartman, CEO & Co-Founder of Ukrainian Action
  • Eduard Fesko, Deputy Ambassador and Deputy Chief of Mission Ukrainian Embassy to the UK
  • Gilly Norton, CEO Supporting Wounded Veterans

Thank you for being part of this meaningful event — and for continuing to stand in solidarity with Ukraine’s veterans.
