Academic Divisions

The Faculty of Life Sciences at UCL is comprised of five key divisions; the Division of Biosciences, the School of Pharmacy, MRC Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology (LMCB), the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit and the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour (SWC).

We are a community of UCL academics, researchers, students and staff who seek to focus passion and purpose on the search for answers to some of the most enduring questions about life on earth, and the urgent problems that face humans and other animals. UCL Life Sciences is home to one of Europe’s leading Schools of Pharmacy and a hub for drug discovery, as well as hosting two of the world’s leading neuroscience institutes.

UCL was rated the top university in the UK for research strength in 2014, helped in part by the Faculty of Life Sciences which is home to one of the most successful and productive groupings of biomedical researchers in Europe. Our research is conducted across the biological scales from single molecules through cells and tissues to whole organisms and animal and human populations.

Did you know?

Two major discoveries were made at UCL during the 1950s; the Immune System and Autoimmune Disease.

The Faculty of Life Sciences has been associated with 7 Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine.

14 current Faculty of Life Science academics have been made Fellows of the Royal Society, and a further twenty-five Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences, the highest concentration of such fellowships at UCL.

UCL hosts two of the world’s leading neuroscience institutes, the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit and the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour.
