Module prerequisites:Basic computing skills using a Windows environment. Basic matlab programming skills (recommended)  
Module outline:This module provides a comprehensive introduction to designing fMRI experiments and a basic introduction to analysing and interpreting the results. In parallel with the lectures, students will complete a mini-fMRI project of their own design that will involve designing and implementing the experiment, collecting approximately two hours of scanning data, analysing the results and presenting them in a short Journal of Neuroscience style paper. Each week will offer a 1.5 hour lecture and a 1 hour practical session aimed at reinforcing the lecture material via hands-on experience with real fMRI data. The module is aimed at anyone planning to use fMRI in their own research. 
Module aims:To understand fundamentals of the BOLD signal and the constraints it places on experimental design; to understand the costs and benefits associated with common designs (blocked, event-related, mixed, sparse, etc); to acquire familiarity with basic image preprocessing tools and their conditioning of the results; to understand the application of the general linear model to mass univariate statistics; a basic understanding of Gaussian random field theory in inferential statistics for imaging; and to acquire basic familiarity with the SPM analysis package.

Notes:This is an optional module in the MRes in Cognitive Neuroscience. It is also open to students from the CoDeS, Research Methods, and Neuroscience, Language & Communication MSc programs, although numbers are capped at 5 students per program due to resource limits.
