Module outline:The course investigates two distinctions within the domain of utterance meaning: the semantics/pragmatics distinction and the explicit/implicit communication distinction. It focuses on several key cases of contentious data in order to reach a deeper understanding of how language, context and pragmatic principles interact.  
Module aims:The main aims of the course are: (a) to investigate the ways in which the encoded linguistic meaning of a sentence or other linguistic expression falls short of determining the proposition a speaker expresses with it on an occasion of use; (b) to explore arguments for and against 'free' pragmatic effects on truth-conditional content; (c) to compare different theoretical approaches (e.g. relevance theory, contextualism, indexicalism) to the issue of pragmatic contributions to the proposition expressed.  
Module objectives:The main objectives of the course are: (a) to give students a comprehensive overview of the primary theoretical positions in semantics/pragmatics and their different predictions, (b) to develop students' analytical skills in applying the different theories to meaning data and assessing the results, and (c) to train students in mounting convincing arguments for and against particular theoretical positions
