Module prerequisites:One year of undergraduate syntax. (Introduction to Generative Grammar A and B or equivalent) 
Module outline:This course provides a mid-level introduction to generative grammar, with a special emphasis on theories that regulate word order. These include proposals that restrict syntactic combination (such as X-bar theory, antisymmetry, and so on), theories that regulate the distribution of arguments (case and theta-theory) and theories that regulate the distribution of adverbials (such as the hierarchies that determine the relative order of adverbials). 
Module aims:In this course we will take a look at the various theories that regulate the distribution of arguments in generative syntax. These theories concern both the interpretation of arguments (theta theory) and their formal licensing (case theory). In addition, we will critically discuss ideas about the linearisation of syntactic structures that have been instrumental to certain developments since the 1990s (in particular Kayne‚Äôs LCA). Students are expected to read chapters from textbooks as well as articles from the primary literature. 
Module objectives:To introduce the students to the problems involving the distribution of arguments, one of the central issues in syntactic theorising. To give an overview of the contrasting points of view that have shaped the debate in this area of syntax. To enable students to read primary literature on case theory, theta theory and the LCA. By the end of the course, students should be able to extract the main ideas of articles in this domain and evaluate them in terms of their internal logic and empirical predictions.
